Billi Thanner in Vienna — seen through schopho

    Light, Architecture and Contemporary Art

Vienna is a city where history is permanently present. Centuries of European culture, religion and architecture shape its public spaces — visible in churches, squares and monuments that continue to define the city's identity. When contemporary art intervenes in this environment, it enters into an immediate dialogue with the past. The Austrian artist Billi Thanner works precisely within this field of tension. Her temporary light and art installations are subtle, poetic gestures that transform familiar places without overpowering them. This journal entry focuses on two of her works in Vienna — interpreted through the photographic lens of schopho, where light, architecture and atmosphere merge into lasting images.

    Stephansdom — "Himmelsleiter" (2021)

    About the Location

Stephansdom is the most iconic landmark of Vienna. Located at the heart of the historic city center, the cathedral has been a spiritual, cultural and architectural focal point for more than 700 years. Its Gothic architecture is defined by strong vertical lines, drawing the gaze upward and symbolizing transcendence.

    The Installation

In 2021, Billi Thanner realized the installation "Himmelsleiter" (Stairway to Heaven) at Stephansdom. A luminous ladder appeared to connect ground and sky — a simple yet powerful symbol rooted in religious and cultural imagery. Rather than competing with the monumental stone architecture, the light installation complemented it. Especially at night, the work created a quiet, contemplative moment within the city — fragile, temporary and deeply symbolic.

    Photographic Interpretation

The photographs by schopho do not aim to document the installation in a technical sense. Instead, they preserve the atmosphere of the moment: light against centuries-old stone, darkness surrounding a subtle vertical gesture.

    Votivkirche — Light Intervention (2025)

    About the Location

The Votivkirche is one of Vienna's most important neo-Gothic buildings. Constructed in the 19th century and located opposite the University of Vienna, it differs significantly from Stephansdom. Its architecture is lighter, more rhythmic and visually delicate.

    The Installation

For her recent work at the Votivkirche, Billi Thanner developed a light intervention that responds directly to the building's structure. Light follows architectural lines, emphasizes height and opens visual space. The installation is not a single object, but an atmosphere — a temporary transformation of perception. For visitors unfamiliar with Vienna, the work reveals the church not merely as a historical monument, but as a living, contemporary space.

    Photographic Interpretation

Schopho's photographs translate this fleeting experience into a lasting visual language. The images focus on structure, light and silence — allowing the architecture and the artwork to speak without explanation.

    Photography as Preservation

Billi Thanner's installations exist only for a limited time. Once removed, they survive through memory — and through images. The photographs by schopho are not reproductions, but interpretations. They preserve the dialogue between contemporary art and historic architecture, between light and urban space. Vienna becomes more than a backdrop. It becomes an active participant in the artwork.
